2010

It has officially been way too long since i have posted something. Life got so busy with school, and children and church, ect. I miss writing so to add another thing to my 2010 To do list I am going to attempt to write on here more often. The end of 2009 was very hectic and life just seems sometimes to get crazy! As you all know we are expecting another precious life due the end of May. We get to find out (hopefully) what we are having on the 12th of this month. School is out until the 19th, but I am going to be taking all online classes, therefore I will pretty much be connected to my computer for 5 months.
This year, I decided we needed to eat healthier, not so much processed, boxed food, not as much fast food and just healthier food in general. Today was day #1 after grocery shopping last night. First off, buying food that is good for you costs more money than food that is contained in a box :) Second, my kids don't seem very happy about the lack of macaroni and cheese, sugary cereal, pop tarts, and the likes.
This morning it was plain yogurt with raspberries, blueberries and granola. I also gave them each a half of banana. The banana was all they ate. Cameron ate a few bites of the yogurt and said it was rotten and leilani didn't even touch it. Hopefully they will get use to the lack of sugar in their diet. Lunch consisted of whole wheat english muffin topped with shredded cheese, ham and pineapple to make little pizzas. They did eat those without complaint. Dinner will be chicken, cabbage and rice.
Hopefully lazy Amber will not kick back in and the process of cooking good food will not fail.

Until next time...

You go girl! Using whole foods should not be more than boxed and processed since you pay for brand names, processing, and packaging. And you will be eating more ecologically since you won't have all that packaging!

Be sure to buy in season. Buying out of season costs more since the food has to be shipped from other countries...

Make up a list of your family's favorite foods and recipes and buy those. Buy just enough for 4 days and go twice a week. If the kids like smoothies, it's a good way to get fruit and protein and milk/yogurt that tastes sweet with fruit that has been blended in.

Mixing plain yogurt with a little honey or rice bran syrup and adding old fashioned oats and a little fruit or raisins is good too.

Learning to make things like tasty soups and stews served with whole-grain toast spread with a little butter is a warming meal that uses meats and vegetables that kids don't mind eating because they're soft and warm. Just make sure the pieces aren't too big for them to fit in their mouths and for fun, use alphabet noodles sometimes...

Casseroles are good too, if you make them with foods they like! Tuna casserole, if made right, is good for the omega3's that we all need so badly for good health. I never liked peas just plain, but when mom made it in casserole, it was better. Sometimes she used canned salmon and with a cream sauce, a pretty good and warm meal. The good thing about these kinds of meals is that you can make extra and eat twice, like for lunch the next day. That way you save time and energy, too!

Oatmeal is a good food for kids and people to get used to eating too. It has good carbs in it that we all need, and also GLA, a hard to get substance that is very helpful for staying healthy. A little honey or maple syrup and butter is good; Bill eats it every morning with just a little butter. I tried it that way, and it wasn't bad--I could actually taste the beautiful subtle taste of the oats! I think little kids are like our elders; they like warm, soft, small pieces, and not too intense flavors and spices, but a tasty flavor...

Have fun! Auntie
